Questions and Answers about OPuS

OPuS began in 1997 as a way to bring together the publishing community of Oxford to mix, mingle and debate the current issues in the industry.

Ten years later, OPuS has over 2000 members and represents over 20 publishing companies.

Today, OPuS hosts a diverse range of publishing events with speakers from both inside and outside the industry.

Q. What sort of topics do you cover?
A. We aim to cover a broad range of topics based on current topics in the industry and responses from membership surveys. Recent topics have included open access, online reference publishing and Google print.

Q. Does that mean you don't deal with traditional print publishing?
A. Not at all! We have had authors Phillip Pullman, Colin Dexter; PR guru Max Clifford, as well as events on career planning and international publishing. We always plan to have at least one event in the year that is not high-tech.

Q. So are they all formal lectures?
A. They are fairly informal but usually very informative. Speakers treat their topic thoroughly with visual aids where appropriate. We frequently invite two speakers with opposing views on a topic. This stimulates good post-talk debate.

Q. Who can come to OPuS events?
A. Our members are companies from the full range of publishing-related industries within the Oxford area, so everyone who works for these companies can attend for free. An individual can join OPuS paying the appropriate annual membership fee.

Q. How often do you hold these events, and where and when are they held?
A. Roughly every two months, events are held at Headington Hill Hall or at the Gypsy Lane site of Oxford Brookes University. Drinks and nibbles are available from 6.30 pm, with the talk starting at 7.30 pm. The evening is usually over by 9 pm. Recently the International Evening held in the dark days of January has become an annual event, with food provided by local restaurants, lots of wine and quick talks on topics related to International Publishing.
