The Who, What, Why of Them, and their Role in the Publishing Value Chain
What is an infomediary and, in this era of increasingly demanding user expectations, evolving publishing models, and rapidly changing technologies, how do they contribute to the publishing value chain?
Simply put, infomediaries harness the internet to unite buyers and sellers of information in efficient virtual one-stop-shops, making it possible to use and easily extract the benefits from vast, diverse bodies of information.
Infomediaries add value through consolidation and selection of information, and by investing in technology platforms to provide an efficient point of contact for end-users.
But what are the implications here for publishers and brand identity? Should they fear losing control of content and being suborned from their rightful place in the information value chain? Or should they embrace the new distribution channels on offer and work more closely with infomediaries both old and new, to reach new markets?
