“Banish January blues in an evening of feasting, carousing, and networking” – that was the invitation to OPuS members, which must have struck a chord, as the resulting turnout of over 100 members, partners, friends, and colleagues was the best attendance at an OPuS event for many months.

One of the main attractions was the variety of ethnic foods available: a wide range of dishes from Greece, Japan, the Lebanon, and Poland – all supplied by Oxford restaurants keen to promote their services. A brilliant selection of “bin ends” from Oxford Brookes’ cellars added to the variety of cultures on display, and all of the wine was gone by 10 pm.

The craic and networking were of such high quality that the speakers delayed their contributions for quite a while, and joined in the festivities.

Peter Mothersole, Managing Director of OUP’s English Language Teaching division, then spoke amusingly of his experiences while travelling in Africa.

Adrian Bullock, Principal Lecturer for Teaching and Learning at Oxford Brookes (kindly standing in at short notice for Paul Richardson) reminded his audience of the importance of the international Dimensions of publishing in view of the growing intake of students from Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe to publishing degree courses in the UK'.

The feedback to the OPuS committee was so positive that plans are already afoot to hold a similar evening in early 2004.
