In the last few years, a number of "traditional" publishers have converted established print reference works into major online reference services.
The players have included OUP, Routledge, Macmillan, McGraw Hill and John Wiley. At the same time a number
of reference aggregators have emerged.
As the use of the Internet as the prime delivery channel for global online reference services grows, how do we define what online reference really is?
Who will win out in delivering online reference materials to the consumer? and what will a mature market for online reference look like? – will the publishers dominate or will the end users have far more say in the way in which material is delivered?
How will the intermediaries such as libraries and consortia play their part, and who is able to foot the substantial bills involved in delivering the goods?
Adam Hodgkin,
Managing Director of Xrefer, and Ian Jacobs, Publisher
of www.groveart.com and www.grovemusic.com and other
online reference services, will discuss the pros and cons, do's and don'ts of online reference and the future for aggregation and disaggregation in this increasingly competitive market.
Adam Hodgkin — Managing Director.
